What is a Reformer?
While the Reformer and Mat are separate equipment, they share a genetic DNA that is evident in the similarity of the exercises. Some exercises can be done on either piece of equipment, like the hundred or leg circles. Another similarity is that both classical Mat and Reformer work is often done in a set sequence devised by Joseph Pilates.
The reformer machine is used as a part of a Pilates exercise session under the direction of an instructor that uses springs for assistance and resistance to achieve proper muscle length and strength in an organised way. Reformer Pilates workouts are science-based and will keep you challenged mentally and physically. Every. Single. Time. Pilates reformer work is low-impact and adaptable to all fitness levels and is a total body sculpting workout. It benefits everyone from teenagers to seniors and elite athletes to people with a more sedentary lifestyle.
Pilates reformer work focuses on core strength and proper muscle engagement which improves athletic performance, back pain, injury recovery, weight loss, balance, bone density and posture to name a few. It is a movement system designed to better our everyday life and well being.
Is it a Good Workout?
Pilates is not a version of yoga, it’s a form of resistance training with low impact on joints but high impact on results. Though, unlike yoga, reformer Pilates wasn’t invented as a spiritual activity, it’s undoubtedly mindful. The proven mental benefits include improving memory; training the brain; the good old endorphin kick; and relieving anxiety and depression.
While mat Pilates does include some exercises that work the legs and arms, they’re usually done with no resistance unless you’re using light dumbbells or a Pilates ring as an accessory. The reformer is able to target your arms and legs while still focusing on the core, providing a more comprehensive workout. Reformer helps to improve your mental stamina and releases endorphins, helping you feel positive and energised. It helps improve concentration, stress management and relaxation.
